What is functional neurological disorder (FND)?

Functional neurological disorder, or FND, is characterized by physical symptoms that cannot be explained by a medical or neurological diagnosis. It is the result of complications with the operation of the nervous system. It also involves how the body and brain send and receive signals. FND can cause difficulty functioning and considerable distress.

Types of functional neurological disorder (FND)

There are various types of FND that are dependent upon the symptoms. They are categorized into seizure-type, motor and other.

Seizure-type FND

Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures, or PNES, includes seizures that are nonepileptic. Although seizures can be caused by numerous conditions, those who have seizures with FND are included in this group.

Motor FND

Motor FND affects body movements. This may include paralysis, arm or leg weakness, difficulty walking, muscle stiffness, tics, etc.

Other FND

Those who experience symptoms that are not related to movement or seizures are in this group. Examples include speech, cognitive issues, and sensations.
